Built in the Poconos: The Friday Phone Call That Built Trust

This post is part of "Built in the Poconos" - an ongoing series from Robert Ace Builders sharing real customer stories and builder experiences from our 75 years of combined experience across the Pocono region and beyond.

Why are you calling me? Because I said I would.
Why are you calling me? Because I said I would.

This past week, I stopped by a customer’s home to take measurements for a renovation project. It was a routine site visit to confirm room sizes, take photos, review concerns, answer questions.

Everything was going smoothly.

Before I left, the homeowner mentioned they wanted to expand the scope of the project.

“No problem at all,” I told them.

They walked me through the changes they were considering. Since it extended beyond our original discussion, I explained that I would need to reach out to several suppliers for updated pricing.

They were eager to proceed regardless of cost but in residential construction, firm numbers matter. Clear expectations matter.

Before leaving, I told them:

“I’ll call you by Friday with the updated pricing.”

Back at the office, I sent a follow-up email confirming everything we discussed. Then I contacted suppliers for quotes.

As the week progressed, none of them responded.

I followed up. Called again. Pushed politely.

By Thursday afternoon, despite my persistence, the suppliers let me know they couldn’t get numbers to me until Monday.

After many years in new home construction and renovation work, this didn’t faze me. Delays happen. It’s part of the industry.

But Friday was still Friday.

And I said I would call.

"Hey. Robert Ace Builders here. I apologize, but I wanted to let you know that the suppliers for your project were very busy and couldn't complete the quotes for me by today like I told you. I will have the info by Monday afternoon at which point I'll give you a call to review."

Silence...

After a few seconds the customer replied, "...then why did you call me?"

My reply - "Because I said I would."

More silence...

"Huh. Most of the builders that I have previously worked with would have just waited until Monday - or whenever - and then called with the info."

I chuckled. “Well, we’re not like most builders. If we say we’re going to do something, we do it. I wouldn’t want you waiting all weekend wondering what was going on.”

And then I heard it.

Relief.

“We really appreciate that. We’ve been saving for this project for a long time. We’re anxious to move forward. Waiting a few more days is no problem as long as we know what’s happening.”

Building a new home or completing a major renovation is a huge financial and emotional investment.

Even when everything is going smoothly, it can feel overwhelming.

Uncertainty is what creates stress.

Clear, proactive communication eliminates it.

This moment is something I’ve experienced many times over the years. The difference between an average contractor and a trusted residential home builder isn’t perfection, it’s transparency.

Clear and transparent communication is one of the core tenets of our Ace Promise.

When you choose Robert Ace Builders, you’re choosing confidence.

You’ll always know:

  • What’s happening

  • When it’s happening

  • And why it’s happening

Because trust isn’t built on Monday when the numbers arrive.

It’s built on Friday — when we call because we said we would.
